The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Home and Community-Based Services (HCBS) within the Geriatrics and Extended Care (GEC) program offers a comprehensive suite of services designed to support aging Veterans and those with complex health needs, enabling them to live independently in their communities. These services aim to prevent or reduce the burden of disability, maximize functional independence, and honor Veterans’ preferences for receiving care in the least restrictive settings possible.

Key Services Include:
Home-Based Primary Care: Delivers in-home medical care for Veterans with complex health issues, providing primary care visits by physicians, nurse practitioners, or physician assistants, along with social work, rehabilitation, and nutritional support.
Veteran-Directed Care: Empowers Veterans to manage their own care services, offering them control over a flexible budget to hire personal care aides, purchase necessary goods and services, and make decisions that best meet their long-term care needs.
Adult Day Health Care: Provides social activities and health services in a community-based setting during daytime hours, supporting Veterans who need assistance with daily activities and offering respite for caregivers.
Respite Care: Offers temporary relief to caregivers by providing short-term care services to Veterans, ensuring continuous support while caregivers rest or attend to personal matters.
Palliative and Hospice Care: Focuses on comfort and quality of life for Veterans with serious illnesses, addressing physical, emotional, and spiritual needs, and supporting both Veterans and their families during challenging times.
The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs HCBS Geriatrics and Extended Care program provides home and community-based services to support aging Veterans and those with complex health needs.
All enrolled Veterans are eligible for HCBS services, provided they have a clinical need for specific services and those services are available in their location. Some programs may have additional eligibility requirements based on medical necessity and availability.
