Empowering programs for adults with special needs, while supporting parents in their journey of caregiving.
Exceptional Futures opened in 2018 as an affiliate of The Exceptional Foundation, a day program in Homewood, Alabama. Atlanta resident Mark Smith saw the positive impact The Exceptional Foundation had on his brother, who was a participant, and wanted to make the program available for families in the Atlanta area.
Participant Criteria: 1. Participants must be at least 18 years old. 2. Participants should possess independent self-help skills. Specifically, participants should be able to independently manage their own toileting, feeding, and health issues. 3. EF will not tolerate verbal or physical aggression. 4. Participants should be able to follow simple instructions and engage in activities in a group setting of one staff member to 15 participants without one-on-one support. 5. Participants should have a level of social maturity that allows them to interact appropriately with other individuals, as well as a desire to participate. 6. EF is a get-up-and-go kind of program. Participants need to be able to adapt to frequent transitions and change. 7. Participants should not require one-on-one assistance due to physical, cognitive, or medical needs. 8. Each participant begins the program on a 30-day trial basis. At that time staff will consult with the family to ensure that the program is a good fit for the participant to continue.
