The Lithonia Housing Authority was formed in July of 1953. Located in the city of Lithonia, in DeKalb County, the agency owns and operates low-income housing. In addition, the Agency administers one hundred ninety-six Housing Choice Vouchers. The 196 Housing Choice Vouchers, administered by the Authority, are issued to eligible citizens in the LHA jurisdiction and are funded under the HUD Section 8 program implemented in 1977. This program is a tenant-based rental assistance program that assists extremely low and low-income individuals and families to rent safe, decent, and affordable dwelling units in the private rental market.
A board of six Commissioners provide leadership and oversight for the Authority. The Mayor of Lithonia under the Housing Authority Laws of the State of Georgia appoints these commissioners. These Commissioners bring diverse backgrounds to the board. Their backgrounds include significant private sector business experience supported by some community service.
